Speaking at the Auto Retail Conclave organized by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), Gadkari said that the global leadership of the company has been affected by the quality of production in India. “The president of Mercedes was telling me (he) he is going to look at increasing the productivity of Mercedes in India … and he wants to export Mercedes worldwide (in the market),” Gadkari said. Currently, Mercedes-Benz combines cars and SUVs in the outside factory in Pune, whose annual capacity is about 20,000 units. In the last three decades, German Luxury Carmaker has invested around Rs 000, Rs. 1 crore in India and all the products so far have been dedicated to fulfilling domestic demand.
On Tuesday, the company reiterated its commitment to the Indian market while addressing reporters in Munich. Matheyus Gizan, a member of the Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s management board, described India as the “priority” market of the company. “We have no plan to do compared to the original,” Zizon told ET that Mercedes-Benz would continue with investment plans with increasing local production.
This step has happened at a time when India and the European Union are doing advanced negotiations for free trade agreements, which can reduce import duty for European cars.
Gadkari underlines that Mercedes-Benz is not the only major vehicle manufacturer who sees India as an export center. He said, “Some major automotive companies in the world are producing not only to meet local demand but also in India for exports.”
